We love getting to know up-and-comers in the sustainability and design industry and we are excited to introduce our two summer interns!
Kate Kelly is an enthusiastic Environmental Geoscience and Environment, Sustainability, and Policy student who recently completed her junior year at Syracuse University. During her junior year, she completed her upper-level coursework and conducted a few major research projects. These research projects involved studying hydrological changes and their associated risks to human infrastructure in the eastern United States and utilizing ArcGIS Pro to visualize spatial patterns in income disparity and environmental hazards. During her second year at Syracuse, she took sustainability-focused courses, specifically studying the Inflation Reduction Act.
During her sophomore spring semester, she studied in Florence, Italy and researched sustainability initiatives in Europe. She is passionate about reducing greenhouse gas emissions and expanding sustainability in the United States and is eager to learn more this summer as a Sustainability Intern at The Sheward Partnership.
In Kate’s free time, she enjoys traveling, hiking, cooking, and running. She looks forward to completing her degree this upcoming fall and gaining more experience this summer.
We are thrilled to have Lauren Johnson with us again this summer as a design intern! Lauren will be entering her third year at the University of Pennsylvania, where she continues her studies in Architecture and Urban Real Estate and Development. Since last summer, Lauren has decided to pursue an intensive design concentration in architecture, which would expand her undergraduate education to include coursework in building systems, architectural physics, construction, structures, and Revit. Lauren is planning to attend graduate school and is exploring dual degree programs in architecture and city planning.
Lauren’s interest in sustainability has grown significantly since her time at TSP last summer, where she helped to develop an Excel analysis tool for all TSP LEED-certified projects. Inspired by this experience and the sustainability team at TSP, she plans to take the LEED Green Associate exam this year.
Over the past year, Lauren has enjoyed the overlap between her courses and her architecture studio. For instance, she took Urban Transformations, a course focused on the development of West Philadelphia and University City, as well as Environment and Society, which examines the various intersections of social factors and the natural world. She applied knowledge from her courses to her two major architectural projects this past year.
One project involved revamping the interior of a “tool library” in West Philadelphia, designed to serve community members by offering donated tools for borrowing and classes in construction. Her second semester project tasked her with creating a pavilion that also displays art work along the banks of the Schuylkill River. She thoroughly enjoyed visiting sites, developing the projects, and creating final models of her designs.
We are thankful to have Kate & Lauren supporting our design and sustainability teams this summer!
