Baltimore/Washington Thurgood Marshall International Airport – Concourse A/B Connector & Baggage Handling System
The Sheward Partnership was commissioned by the Maryland Aviation Administration (MAA) to serve as the Architect of Record for a new $340 Million expansion to the AB Terminal at BWI Airport. The Apron level expansion and renovation includes space to house a new inline baggage screening system including new inbound and outbound baggage equipment and carousels, expanded CBIS and CBRA baggage handling program space and equipment, and new airline operations spaces. The departures level includes a building expansion connecting the existing Concourses A and B and the existing Terminal AB food court. This expansion includes five new holdrooms, two new restrooms, airline training space, and a central marketplace for concession kiosks and with connectivity to the terminal’s existing food court. To meet the unique economic challenges post-2020, the design incorporated large, unfinished shell space for future expansion. This allowed the initial building scope to be limited to the program necessary to meet airline operational requirements while amenities, such as concession space, could be added retroactively when the demand and budget for that development align. TSP provided comprehensive energy optimization modeling to illustrate that proposed designs will meet the Maryland energy code, working with the team to evaluate specific design measures to reduce energy usage.
