We are excited to announce a new member of The Sheward Partnership team! Scott J Kalner, AIA, LEED AP, PMP has joined TSP as Architectural Technical Director based out of our Philadelphia office.
Scott has 40 years of experience working as an architect, project manager and owner’s representative. He has led large-scale and complex projects including new 330,000 SF high schools, renovations at Philadelphia City Hall and the development of the Moynihan Train Hall in New York City. Past clients have included Amtrak, SEPTA, WMATA, School District of Philadelphia and several suburban school districts. He has specialized in both education and transportation projects with significant experience with preservation, adaptive reuse and institutional work.
As a professional, Scott has served his community, volunteering as a vital member on local library boards, civic associations and government agencies. He was chair of the Lower Merion Historical Architectural Review Board for 7 years and was a member of a committee tasked with developing recommendations for the Lower Merion Township comprehensive plan. He currently serves as president of Lower Merion Affordable Housing, a group committed to the creation and preservation of affordable housing in the Township.
Scott was born in Brooklyn, New York and, thanks to his father, he is still a Mets fan. He went to high school near Stony Brook on Long Island. For college, Scott ventured south to the University of Virginia to get a degree in city planning. Not stopping there, Scott continued his education by getting a professional degree in architecture at Penn and decided that Philadelphia is the place to be. He has lived here since grad school, with a short hiatus in New Jersey with his wife who got her master’s degree in city planning at Rutgers.
Scott is married to Linda, recently celebrating their 40th wedding anniversary while on vacation in Norway. They met while working as volunteer disc jockeys on the college radio station, WTJU. They have two adult daughters, Lena and Rachel, who live on their own (thankfully) in the area.
Scott really enjoys traveling, taking the train across the country, both ways on a solo jaunt, staying in San Francisco and Los Angeles. He and Linda took a slightly different train route in their Manifest Destiny tour, stopping in Chicago, Glacier National Park and Seattle and even continued the trip into Vancouver. Shortly after grad school, Scott and Linda took off from their jobs and spent ten weeks in Europe, visiting ten countries on a shoestring budget. It was enlightening for them to see Czechoslovakia and Hungary before the end of Communist rule.
In addition to traveling, Scott is an avid photographer, likes to bicycle, read, watch baseball and wander around cities looking for architectural gems. His wife and girls know they must be patient when traveling with him, stopping to look around and visiting the buildings he loves.
We are thrilled to have Scott’s immense knowledge and experience supporting our design team. Welcome, Scott!
